Trump confident US to gain control of Greenland
US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the United States will gain control over Greenland. He stated that 57,000 island residents supposedly want this, informs the BBC.
Trump made the statement aboard Air Force One on Saturday, January 25.
"I think we're going to have it," said the US president.
Trump added that supposedly 57,000 residents of Greenland want to join the United States.
"I don't really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn't allow that to happen because it's for the protection of the free world... It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we're the one that can provide the freedom. They can't," Trump said.
Greenland dispute
Donald Trump expressed his desire to purchase Greenland during his first term in 2019 and emphasized that US control over Greenland is "an absolute necessity" for international security. After winning the 2024 election, he revived talks of purchasing the island.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insisted that Greenland is not for sale. She had a phone conversation with Trump before his inauguration. According to the Financial Times, citing sources, the conversation was quite tense and difficult, with Trump being "aggressive and confrontational."
Meanwhile, there have been statements from the island about the desire for independence.
