The US will be represented at the upcoming Munich Security Conference by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In addition, his European tour will include a series of bilateral meetings, reports Bloomberg.
The outlet notes that Rubio’s meetings in Europe come just weeks after US President Donald Trump’s plans to purchase Greenland sparked concern among American allies.
After Munich, Rubio is expected to visit Slovakia (Bratislava) to discuss regional security, military modernization, bilateral issues, and the country’s commitments within NATO with government officials.
Rubio’s visit to Hungary
The US Secretary of State’s tour will conclude with a visit to Budapest, Hungary’s capital. On February 16, he is scheduled to meet with key officials to strengthen US bilateral and regional interests, including in peace processes.
Bloomberg notes that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán proposed Budapest as a potential venue for a meeting between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss peace negotiations in Ukraine.
The report also notes that, shortly before Hungary’s elections, Orbán’s ruling party, an ally of Trump, trails the opposition in polls.
However, the US leader expressed his support for Orbán in last week’s election campaign, and this is not the first time he has done so.
Trump’s plans for Greenland
Bloomberg also notes that the US, Denmark, and Greenland recently discussed a new agreement on the American presence on the Arctic island without transferring control to the US.
However, just last month, Donald Trump threatened European countries that opposed his plans for Greenland with tariffs, though he later abandoned the threat, saying a framework for a future agreement had been reached.
