Trump can't legally seek a third term in 2028, despite his claims

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of extending his presidential term, but the Constitution rules out such a possibility, reports The New York Times.
Although the US Constitution prohibits holding the office of president for more than two terms, Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of a third presidential term. In an interview with NBC News, he stated that he was not joking about the idea of a third term and mentioned the existence of certain "methods" to bypass this limitation.
Moreover, during a meeting with Republicans in Florida, Trump suggested that the term limit might be reconsidered. He also noted that he had raised substantial funds for the next election campaign, but he was unsure whether he could use them for himself.
At a Republican gathering in November, Trump jokingly proposed that they help extend his presidency, saying: "I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, 'He’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out'."
Possible legal loopholes and political initiatives
To amend the Constitution and allow a third term, not only would the support of two-thirds of both chambers of Congress be required but also ratification by a majority of states, which is practically impossible. However, some of Trump's allies are trying to promote similar initiatives.
For example, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed a resolution that would allow the president to be elected for a third term. According to him, Trump deserves additional time to implement his agenda. Nevertheless, the chances of passing this initiative are extremely slim.
Trump’s supporters are also discussing the possibility of running in the 2028 election as vice president in order to assume office after the elected president resigns. However, constitutional law states that a person ineligible to be elected president cannot hold the office of vice president either.
Thus, despite the discussions among Trump supporters and his own recent statements, experts unanimously agree: under the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, Trump cannot run for a third term.
