Trump campaign hack indicates wider election disruptions - WP
Analysts and intelligence experts claimed that broader foreign efforts might be underway to disrupt the US presidential election after the Trump campaign stated its email systems were breached by an Iran-backed hacker group, according to The Washington Post.
The experts believe if Iranian hackers were behind that attack, they possibly got more files than media outlets reported. They added hackers may plan to publish other leaked materials using “mainstream or less reputable news sites.”
“Pink slime’ and fake sites are in their repertoire, so it’s possible that information will get posted in other forums if US media outlets hold back. It’s possible they do both,” said Chris Krebs, the founding head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
WP also reports that the specialists are expecting more hacks and leaks as the election campaign gets closer to its end. Media says the latest government reports confirm their concerns, which point to the increase of Russian and Iranian propaganda about the US election.
Trump campaign hack
Earlier, on August 9, Donald Trump’s team reported that hackers backed by Iran breached their computers.
US officials didn’t confirm that the Trump campaign's emails were indeed hacked. However, the National Security Council spokesperson stated that the Biden administration “strongly condemns any foreign government or entity who attempts to interfere in our electoral process or seeks to undermine confidence in our democratic institutions.”
The FBI also stated that it was aware of the media reports but wouldn’t comment. The Harris-Walz campaign refuses to comment on the Trump campaign's possible breach.
On August 12, US Congressmen urged the government to declassify the potential breach of the Trump campaign's emails.
