US President Donald Trump will soon respond to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Leavitt said that Trump is aware of Putin's proposal to extend the START Treaty for another year.

"I'll let him comment on it later. It sounds pretty good, but he wants to make some comments on that himself, and I will let him do that," she added.

What Putin said

Today, September 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is ready, for one year after February 5, 2026, "to keep adhering to the central quantitative limitations of the New START Treaty."

According to him, such a scenario is possible if the United States also complies with these limits during this period.

The Kremlin leader added that the decision on a possible extension of the START Treaty will be made based on an "analysis of the situation."

By the way, earlier, Trump stated that he wants to prepare a new treaty on the reduction of offensive weapons with Russia, since the current START Treaty expires on February 5 next year.

He called the expiration of START "a big problem for the world."
