US President Donald Trump appears to have backed away from the idea of turning Canada into the 51st US state. He said he has no plans to invade the country, The Telegraph reports.

Trump gave an interview to Robert Hardman, the Royal biographer, for his new book about Elizabeth II. Hardman urged the US President to "leave Canada alone," noting that any encroachment on the country would "make the King of Canada unhappy," who is set to visit the United States in late April.

"I suppose the Canadians have got 200 years of history and all that 'Oh, Canada' thing. You can’t deal with that in three and a half years. I guess it’s not going to happen! (referring to Canada joining the US – ed.)." Trump said.

The American leader also questioned whether Canadians still recognize the king as their head of state.

"But they have these terrible politicians. They’re nice to my face, and then they say bad things behind my back," he added.

Trump’s ambitions toward Canada

Last year, even before his inauguration, Donald Trump said he wanted to make Canada the 51st US state. In his view, the border between the two countries is artificial.

He repeatedly referred to then–Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the governor of the Great State of Canada.

In February last year, the American leader also said at an elite Alfalfa Club dinner in Washington that Canada would become the 51st state, Greenland the 52nd, and Venezuela the 53rd.
