The United States plans to lift sanctions on Türkiye that were imposed after Ankara purchased Russian S-400 air defense systems, stated US President Donald Trump during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Ankara, according to Clash Report.

Trump stressed that there are many people against whom Washington could impose sanctions. At the same time, he said that the time has come to lift sanctions on Türkiye.

"It's time to do that... We don't want to sanction friends. It's very simple," Trump said.

The United States imposed sanctions on Türkiye in 2020 after Ankara purchased Russian S-400 air defense systems.

In addition, the US removed Türkiye from the F-35 fighter jet program, arguing that operating the Russian-made systems posed security risks to the American aircraft.

The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which administers sanctions, recently launched a dedicated online portal. It allows individuals and entities to submit requests for removal from sanctions lists or for a review of existing sanctions.

It is also worth noting that at the end of June, the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, said that US oil sanctions against Russia had come back into force.

Meanwhile, Europe is preparing new sanctions targeting manufacturers of components used in Russia's Shahed drones. One of the drones' key navigation systems could be among the targets of the new restrictions.
