US President Donald Trump said that the government shutdown in the US is nearing its end, CNN reports.
“It looks like we’re getting close to the shutdown ending. You’ll know very soon,” Trump told reporters.
According to CNN, a bipartisan agreement has been reached in the US Senate to fund the government through January 30, and a vote on the Affordable Care Act legislation is scheduled for December.
Sources also reported that the agreement includes reversing Trump’s decision to furlough federal employees and introduces provisions to prevent similar actions in the future.
Additionally, the deal will fund food stamp programs for the entire 2026 fiscal year.
One source noted that the Senate Democratic caucus has enough members to implement the plan and end the 40-day government shutdown.
At least eight Democratic senators have agreed to vote for the deal, which was reached Sunday evening through the mediation of three former governors and other officials.
The agreement also ensures that all federal employees will receive back pay for the period of the shutdown.
According to CNN, a vote to end the shutdown is expected within hours.
A Republican aide told the outlet that the Senate was expected to vote on the government funding agreement between 8:30 and 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
US shutdown and its consequences
The government shutdown in the US occurred due to the lack of an agreed-upon vote on federal funding. The shutdown has now lasted 40 days, breaking all previous US records.
Economists estimate that the shutdown is costing the US economy about $15 billion per day. Many federal agencies are already feeling the effects of budget restrictions. Recently, it was reported that US airlines have canceled over 1,000 flights.
In addition, the shutdown has delayed the export of more than $5 billion worth of US weapons intended for NATO allies and Ukraine.
