On Friday, October 17, a meeting will take place between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It will begin in the afternoon in Washington time (in the evening in Kyiv), according to Roll Call, which tracks the US leader's schedule.
According to the service, the meeting of the heads of state will begin at 1:00 p.m. Washington time (8:00 p.m. Kyiv time). The talks will take place in an informal setting over dinner and will be closed to the press.
It is also noted that after this meeting, at 3:00 p.m. Washington time (10:00 p.m. Kyiv time), Donald Trump will leave for Florida.
An unexpected conversation with Putin on the eve of the talks between Trump and Zelenskyy
According to statements by the leaders and information in the media, Trump and Zelenskyy intend to discuss the possible transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, the strengthening of Ukrainian air defense, and even Ukraine's plans to launch an offensive.
According to Axios, Zelenskyy arrived in the United States on Thursday and was optimistic about the upcoming meeting. However, yesterday, Trump, apparently unexpectedly, held a phone conversation with Kremlin head Vladimir Putin, after which he announced a new summit with him in Hungary. The meeting is scheduled for the next two weeks.
Axios reported that Zelenskyy and his team were surprised by Trump's statements.
After these talks, the US president made an ambiguous statement about the Tomahawks. Earlier, he had said that the decision to transfer them to Ukraine had essentially been made, but yesterday, he stated that the United States has many of these missiles. Yet, they are needed directly by America, and the country cannot deplete its stock. Whether this was a de facto refusal to Ukraine remains unclear.
