US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation today, March 9. One of the main topics discussed was the settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine, stated Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, according to TASS.

Key points

According to Ushakov, the conversation "took place at the initiative of the American side." The US President wanted to discuss developments in the international situation.

"The focus was on the situation around the conflict with Iran and on the trilateral negotiations involving US representatives regarding the Ukrainian settlement," he said.

Ushakov noted that this was the first conversation between Putin and Trump since the end of 2025. The call lasted about an hour.

Russia’s war against Ukraine

The Kremlin aide said Trump expressed interest in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine as quickly as possible by reaching a ceasefire and achieving a long-term settlement.

Putin, in response, praised US mediation efforts.

"An assessment of the current situation on the line of contact, where Russian troops are advancing successfully, was provided (to the US President - ed.). This is a factor that should encourage the regime in Kyiv to follow the path of negotiations," Ushakov said.

US and Israel’s war with Iran

The Russian leader also shared with the American President his vision of how the conflict with Iran could be resolved.

At the same time, according to the Kremlin aide, Trump gave his own assessment of the US-Israeli operation.
