Trump administration prepares for sweeping immigration raids post-inauguration
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans a large-scale operation targeting immigrants in the country. Arrests are set to intensify after Donald Trump’s inauguration, according to NBC News, CBS News, and Associated Press.
According to an NBC source, several locations across Chicago (where there is a higher concentration of undocumented immigrants) will be targeted in these raids. CBS confirms that US agencies will focus on Chicago but also indicates arrests will take place in other regions.
As per the document, the operation is expected to begin on Tuesday and conclude by Monday, January 27. However, the dates may change.
One official stated that federal immigration officers will review over 300 individuals who have committed severe and violent crimes. This will mark the first attempt by Trump’s administration to fulfill the promise of large-scale deportations.
“US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests only part of its targets in such operations, although Trump is expected to cast a wider net than President Joe Biden, whose focus on detentions far from the border has largely been limited to those with serious criminal records and threats to national security,” writes AP.
Trump aides have indicated they will also arrest others, such as spouses or roommates, who are not direct targets but are in the country illegally.
Additionally, according to the document cited by NBC, a briefing for agents planning to participate in the operation, called “Operation Safeguard,” was scheduled for Friday afternoon in Chicago. The document also mentions that agents were offered the option to participate voluntarily, and more agents volunteered than were needed.
Yesterday, CNN reported that Donald Trump’s team is finalizing a package of executive orders on immigration (including the deportation of undocumented immigrants).
These orders are expected to be published within the first hours after Trump officially assumes the presidency.
