Officials from the administration of US President Donald Trump have dismissed employees from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). This agency is responsible for managing the country's nuclear arsenal, reports CNN.

The firings took place as part of a restructuring of the Department of Energy. According to CNN, over 300 employees were dismissed. However, a US Department of Energy representative denied the reported number, stating that fewer than 50 people were let go, primarily holding administrative and clerical positions.

Among those dismissed were employees working at facilities involved in the production of nuclear weapons. These employees oversee contractors involved in nuclear weapons creation and conduct inspections. Also among those let go were staff from the headquarters who write requirements and instructions for contractors.

Sources told CNN that officials appeared to be unaware that the agency oversees America's nuclear weapons.

"These individuals were fired because no one has taken anytime to understand what we do and the importance of our work to the nation’s national security," one source expressed to the outlet.

In response, US lawmakers expressed their concern over the firings to the Department of Energy. Senators met with Energy Secretary Chris Wright to voice their concerns about the cuts at the NNSA, which employs 1,800 staff members across various facilities nationwide.

The only employees not affected by the layoffs are those working under probation in the Office of Secure Transport, responsible for the safe transportation of nuclear weapons within the country.

Trump and Elon Musk, who heads the Office of Government Efficiency, are aiming to reduce government spending within the president's administration.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut the US Department of Education's budget by over $900 million.

Additionally, President Trump recently dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, who is involved in his criminal case.
