In Europe last week, what could be called the "theft of the year" took place - unknown perpetrators stole 12 tons of KitKat chocolate bars. The thieves disappeared along with the truck that was transporting the cargo, according to Reuters.
KitKat, which is owned by Swiss food giant Nestlé, reported that the truck carrying 413,793 bars (a total of 12 tons) departed from central Italy but never reached its intended final destination in Poland.
The whereabouts of the cargo, the driver, and the vehicle still appear to be unknown. KitKat stated that the stolen bars can be traced using a unique batch code.
Therefore, anyone who scans the batch numbers and finds chocolate from the stolen lot can contact the company and report the circumstances of the discovery. KitKat promises to provide detailed instructions on how to do so.
"Whilst we appreciate the criminals' exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes," the company added.
Another "epic" theft occurred in February in the Slovak city of Košice, where police detained 23-year-old Ukrainian Mykhailo B., who was trying to steal croissants. It later turned out that he was wanted internationally.
