We often lack vitamins and sunlight in winter. The New Year's feasts end, and sometimes after them, we gain weight, which doesn't bode well for our health.

What supplements should be taken during this time, reported by RBC-Ukraine, according to Express.

What supplements should be taken in January?

Health expert Samantha Greener has indicated several supplements that can be taken in winter to support immunity and increase energy levels.

Not only the flu season but also colder, darker days can affect us, making us feel sluggish, tired, and fatigued regularly.

"Taking supplements such as B vitamins and magnesium can help with energy levels and reduce tiredness. Supplements such as zinc and vitamins D and C have also been suggested to be a help in fighting off winter infections and colds by providing the immune system with an extra helping hand," the expert stated.

Vitamin D

Our body typically produces all the necessary Vitamin D from sunlight, but during autumn and winter months, sunlight is scarce.

While the vitamin can be found in some foods like fatty fish, red meat, and eggs, sometimes it's insufficient.

"As many people find it difficult to get enough from food alone, the NHS recommend all adults consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement at this time of year," she said.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is well-known for supporting our immune system during this time of year. It also possesses antioxidant properties that help protect cells from oxidative stress.

Cod liver oil

According to Samantha, cod liver oil is an excellent supplement that can be taken throughout the year, especially during the winter months. It's a rich natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins A and D. Often dubbed as "brain food," it also provides nutritional support for our vision, bones, immune system, and skin health.

Zinc

Zinc is a less known supplement, but it's a popular choice during winter months.

"It not only helps support a healthy immune system, but also promotes healthy hair, skin and nails, which can often be affected by the colder weather," Samantha said.

Echinacea

This herbal remedy can help prevent illness. It can be taken either as a preventive measure against colds and the flu or can help alleviate symptoms if taken at the first signs of a cold.

Milk thistle

Milk thistle supplements are most commonly available in tablet form. It's another traditional herbal remedy that can help ease feelings of stomach upset after periods of overindulgence in food.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B actually includes eight different vitamins. Some benefits include bolstering a healthy immune system, boosting energy levels, maintaining healthy hair, skin, and nails, as well as supporting cognitive function.
