Bill Gates says rapid AI development will eventually allow machines to surpass human cognitive abilities entirely. He believes the world is approaching a critical point at which controlling algorithms will become one of humanity's greatest challenges, according to The Observer.

AI as an 'evolutionary event'

During a meeting at the Royal Society in London, Microsoft founder Bill Gates compared the emergence of artificial intelligence to an evolutionary event that will change the very concept of intelligence on Earth.

He noted that new systems already outperform humans in many fields, and the programming skills he's been passionate about since age 13 have become obsolete.

The main risks and challenges highlighted by Gates:

In the coming years, algorithms will begin to outperform humans in mathematical research, engineering, and biological modeling.

Artificial intelligence will gradually displace both white-collar and blue-collar workers, replacing intellectual labor and physical work through humanoid robots.

Within three to four years, alignment control and algorithms' ability to recursively improve themselves will become critically important.

"AI could be out of control before the next World Cup," Gates noted.

Cybersecurity and the risk of bioterrorism are particular causes for concern.

According to the Microsoft founder, thousands of system failures will be considered normal because early software had architectural flaws, and AI-enabled pandemics could surpass COVID-19 in scale.

Impact on economy, taxes, and labor market

Gates argues that capitalism's current structure incentivizes companies to hire robots en masse and fire people without considering the consequences.

As a result, government tax revenues will decline precisely when public authorities need enormous sums to provide social support and retrain workers.

To ease the transition, he proposes two main solutions:

  • Establishing a category of professions reserved for humans.
  • Introducing a tax on AI tokens to fund social protection and compensate for lost jobs.

Despite his warnings, the Microsoft founder continues to direct funding through his foundation toward global health. He plans to close it by 2045 after using advanced technologies to help eliminate malaria, polio, and child mortality.

At the same time, he is urging the United States and China to work together on regulation, warning that an uncontrolled AI arms race poses a threat to all of humanity.
