More American defense capabilities will be deployed in the Middle East to strengthen the protection of US forces in the region and to safeguard Israel, reports Pentagon.

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated that this deployment will be a response to threats from Iran and Iranian-backed armed groups.

Singh said that the commitment to enhance regional defense capabilities stems from discussions held last night between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to her, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin continued these discussions this morning with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Austin will oversee several upcoming measures to bolster the protection of US forces throughout the region, provide enhanced support for Israel’s defense, and ensure the readiness of the US to respond to this developing crisis.

The Pentagon did not specify which forces and units will be deployed. Singh mentioned that the US already has reliable defense capabilities in the region, and these forces could be repositioned within the theater of operations. However, White House officials indicated that there will be new capabilities for the region.

The Pentagon representative emphasized that any new capabilities will be strictly defensive and will send a signal of deterrence.

The US will continue to work with allies and partners to de-escalate the situation in the region. Singh noted that they are involved in Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea to keep this vital maritime communication line open.

Threat of a new war

Iran has threatened Israel with a severe response following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on August 31. The exact cause of Haniyeh's death remains unclear - whether from an airstrike or a bomb planted in the building. Both Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of the attack, although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the operation.

Additionally, tensions are escalating between Israel and Lebanon due to actions by the radical Lebanese group Hezbollah, which is believed to be funded by Iran.
