Passengers on trains throughout Germany will face the cancellation of thousands of services due to a strike by the GDL train drivers' union. The strike will last from Thursday evening to Friday evening (December 7-8).

People are advised to reschedule their trips or get a refund for their tickets, according to tagesschau.de and wdr.de.

The train drivers' union calls for a strike by all employees of intercity and regional transportation and workers of the city railway in Berlin and Hamburg.

In addition to Deutsche Bahn, the strike affects regional train operators Transdev, AKN Eisenbahn, and City-Bahn Chemnitz. Among the demands of the train, drivers are reducing working hours from 38 to 35 hours and increasing pay by 555 euros.

"The train drivers' union is ruining the second Advent weekend for millions of innocent people. Striking just before the schedule change is irresponsible," Deutsche Bahn commented on the strike.

Deutsche Bahn plans to maintain about 20% of intercity traffic during the warning strike. Tickets for canceled trains can be used in the coming days or refunded.

The union has promised not to strike again until January 7. Previously, the GDL union organized a strike on the railway on November 15 and 16. During the 20-hour work stoppage, 80% of intercity services were canceled. In some regions, there were virtually no and almost no commuter trains.
