The scientific advisor and doctor stated that there is emerging evidence that two types of mushrooms strengthen the immune system, support mental health, and are beneficial for the heart.
"Mushrooms have been gaining huge traction in the health and wellness world recently although their health associations go back thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine incorporates mushrooms for their therapeutic properties thanks to the content of beta-glucans (a type of dietary fibre) linked with heart health and immune health," said scientist Damien Bové.
There are over 10,000 species of mushrooms worldwide, some of which are edible and some are not. Two types of mushrooms that have attracted particular attention are lion's mane and reishi.
Laboratory studies show that lion's mane mushrooms may help increase the activity of the intestinal immune system.
Further research indicates that the protein in these mushrooms promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which strengthen immunity.
It is also reported that reishi mushrooms may improve immune function.
Lion's mane also supports mental health. In a small four-week placebo-controlled study involving women with various health complaints, including menopausal symptoms and poor sleep quality, participants who consumed the extract reported lower levels of irritability and anxiety compared to the placebo group.
Dr. Pamela Mason, a researcher and dietitian, said there is also evidence that mushrooms offer benefits in terms of inflammation, cardiovascular health, and cognitive health.
