Windows can be cleaned quickly and streak-free if you choose the right products and follow a simple sequence of steps. This helps reduce cleaning time and ensures an evenly clean glass surface, according to Good Housekeeping.

How to clean windows

Start by removing dust from the window frame using a cloth. Do the same for blinds. If you have curtains, now is the time to take them down and wash them.

To clean window screens, remove them and brush off dust. If they need deeper cleaning, wash them and let them dry completely.

Next, spray the windows with a glass cleaner. Using a paper towel or microfiber cloth, wipe the windows from top to bottom. If streaks appear, wipe the glass again.

While the screens dry, clean the outside of the windows and frames with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt and dust.

Homemade glass cleaner

You can make a cleaning solution at home using vinegar:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration)
  • 2 drops dishwashing liquid to remove grease
  • 1–2 drops of orange essential oil (optional)

Mix the ingredients and pour into a spray bottle.

Common mistakes when cleaning windows

  • Cleaning on a sunny day. The cleaner dries too quickly on “hot” windows, leaving streaks.
  • Not removing dust and dirt first. Use a handheld vacuum and brush to clear dirt from the frame. This prevents it from turning into sludge when you spray the cleaner.
  • Using an old cotton cloth. It’s better to use reusable microfiber cloths. They absorb moisture well, are washable, and leave glass streak-free.

If you prefer paper towels, choose high-quality ones that don’t tear or leave fibers.
