Fold your pillow in half: This simple trick reveals if it’s time to replace it

A pillow gradually wears out, even if it still looks perfectly fine on the outside. Lumpy filling, yellow stains, or discomfort after sleeping can all be signs that it is time for a replacement.
RBC-Ukraine explains how to check your pillow in just a few minutes and find out whether it is time to replace it.
On average, experts recommend replacing a pillow approximately every 1–2 years, but the exact lifespan depends on the material, quality, and how well it has been cared for. Some pillows can last longer, but you should not rely solely on the purchase date.
There are several much clearer signs to look out for.
How to tell when it’s time to replace your pillow
1. Persistent yellow stains have appeared on the pillow
Yellowing is one of the most noticeable signs of a pillow aging. It can occur due to sweat, skin oils, saliva, damp hair, or cosmetics that gradually seep through the pillowcase.
If the stains have become persistent and the pillow has noticeably changed color, it may be time to consider replacing it, especially if it has also developed an odor or changed shape.
2. The pillow no longer holds its shape
Over time, the filling can become compressed, form lumps, or become flat. As a result, your head and neck no longer receive the support the pillow originally provided.
Pay particular attention if you wake up with discomfort in your neck or shoulders or constantly adjust your pillow during the night.
3. A simple test: Fold the pillow in half
This is one of the easiest ways to check your pillow at home.
Fold it in half, press it down, and then let go. If it quickly returns to its original shape, the filling is still resilient. If the pillow stays folded or takes a very long time to regain its shape, it has likely lost its properties.
However, this test does not work for every type of pillow, so the filling material should also be taken into account.
4. You start waking up with neck pain or tension
A pillow should support your head and neck in a comfortable position. If you used to sleep well but now regularly wake up with pain or stiffness, the cause could be a worn-out or unsuitable pillow.
However, if the discomfort persists after replacing the pillow, you should see a doctor, as the cause may not be related to your bedding.
5. An unpleasant odor has appeared
While you sleep, your pillow comes into contact with sweat, skin oils, hair, and other contaminants. Over time, these can accumulate inside the filling and cause a persistent odor.
If the smell does not disappear after proper washing according to the manufacturer’s instructions, that is another reason to consider getting a new pillow.
Why it’s important to keep your pillow clean
Bedding can accumulate dust mites and their allergens. For people who are sensitive to them, this can worsen allergy symptoms, especially at night.
That is why it is important to wash pillowcases regularly and use a protective pillow cover.
However, there is no universal rule for washing the pillow itself. The temperature and cleaning method depend on the filling, so always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before washing.
How to know when it’s time to buy a new one
You do not have to wait until your pillow becomes completely unusable. Consider replacing it if it:
- has lost its shape and become flat
- has developed lumps
- does not return to its shape after being folded
- has persistent yellow stains or an unpleasant odor
- no longer provides comfortable support
- has started causing discomfort after sleep.
So, if your pillow is already a few years old and shows several of these signs, it may be time to stop putting off buying a new one.
