Beans may look like an ordinary pantry product, but their composition can have a subtle impact on brain function. This makes them much more valuable than they may seem at first glance, according to EatingWell.

Why beans are good for the brain

A key part of the MIND diet

Beans are a core component of the MIND diet, an evidence-based eating pattern designed to support brain health and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The MIND diet emphasizes brain-protective foods such as beans, leafy greens, berries, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil.

All legumes, including black beans, chickpeas, lentils, and soybeans, are included in the MIND diet, with one serving defined as 1/2 cup of cooked beans.

Contain brain-protective nutrients

According to Scientific Reports, beans are rich in folate and other B vitamins, which play multiple roles in supporting brain health, including the production of serotonin and dopamine — key brain chemicals responsible for mood, focus, and cognitive function.

In addition to beneficial B vitamins, beans also contain polyphenols. These plant compounds help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, both linked to aging and neurodegeneration.

Fiber supports gut health

Beans are one of the richest sources of dietary fiber, providing about 6 to 9 grams per serving.

In the gut, fiber acts as fuel for beneficial bacteria, helping them thrive. When these microbes break down fiber, they produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation.

How to eat more beans

Canned beans are one of the most versatile pantry staples. They easily adapt to different tastes and cooking styles.

Here are a few ways to enjoy more canned beans:

  • Simmer in soups – canned beans are perfect for soups as they require no preparation, hold their shape during long cooking, and help thicken the broth
  • Add to salads – beans add richness and substance to any salad
  • Add to pasta – try adding beans to pasta dishes or lentil-based Bolognese sauce. Mashed white beans can be mixed into pasta sauce for a creamy texture without heavy cream
  • Replace meat with beans – one of the benefits of canned beans is how easily they can replace animal protein
