These supermarket foods aren’t as unhealthy as you might think
A number of ultra-processed foods that you might have considered unhealthy can actually be included in a daily diet, according to the British Health Foundation.
What we know about ultra-processed foods
Ultra-processed foods (UPF), such as cakes, cookies, and ready-made meals, often contain high levels of saturated fats, salt, and sugar. The British Health Foundation advises minimizing the consumption of these foods to maintain a healthy diet.
However, a new Harvard study has shown that some of these foods may not be as bad as others. In fact, researchers suggest that processed foods don’t necessarily harm cardiovascular health.
Which foods are not as harmful as you thought
Canned beans
Some types of baked beans in supermarkets may be considered ultra-processed because they are filled with modified starches and fructose syrups. However, they can also be rich in fiber and protein, so it's worth choosing cans with the fewest additives.
Tomato-based sauces
The Italian favorite, tomato sauce, is a perfect addition to spaghetti Bolognese. According to nutritionist Sam Rice, it's packed with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. However, many sauces contain high amounts of added sugar and salt, so it's important to check the ingredients before buying. Another healthy option is to use canned tomatoes.
Peanut butter
Spreads are often considered some of the worst foods, but peanut butter is not a dangerous product. It’s high in protein and contains some healthy fats. However, check the label to ensure there are no added oils or fats, especially palm oil.
Whole grain cereals
Whole grain cereals contain fiber that’s good for the gut, along with vitamins and minerals. However, it's important to check the ingredients, as many cereals have high sugar content.
Fruit yogurt
The study reported that yogurts can protect against strokes and heart attacks. Fermented varieties, including Greek yogurt, kefir, and natural yogurt, are the best options Additionally, yogurt with jam and probiotic bases can also be healthy, but people should avoid those with high sugar content.
Whole-grain bread
While white bread can contain preservatives, oils, and emulsifiers, whole-grain bread with seeds and grains is rich in fiber, vitamins, and protein.
Low-fat popcorn
Although it might seem unhealthy due to its long shelf life, low-fat popcorn is not only a tasty snack but also low in calories and can be very filling and rich in fiber.
