A microstroke is a type of stroke accompanied by impaired blood circulation and a lack of oxygen supply to certain parts of the brain. It is considered the first sign of a possible stroke, which can have serious consequences, including death, reports Liverpool ECHO.
The main symptoms of stroke appear very quickly
The face may be down to one side, the person may not smile, or their mouth or eyes may be drooping.
The person may not be able to raise both arms and hold them up because of weakness or numbness in one arm.
Speech may be slurred or distorted, or the person may not be able to speak at all.
If you notice any of these signs, call your doctor right away.
The Stroke Association also reports that blurred vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes may be a sign of a microstroke.
What factors can cause a microstroke
The likelihood of a microstroke is increased by the same factors that provoke a stroke:
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol, which contributes to the creation of atherosclerotic plaques that narrow the arteries
- smoking, which damages the walls of blood vessels with the formation of blood clots
- diabetes
- body mass index is higher than normal
- insufficient physical activity
- unhealthy diet
- excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages
The risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke increases with age, especially after 55 years, in the presence of a hereditary predisposition (family history of cardiovascular disasters), after myocardial infarction and heart failure.
