The first days of May 2026 will be a real test for the body. Solar activity is preparing a prolonged geomagnetic storm that may affect not only weather-sensitive people but even those who usually do not complain about their health, according to the SWPC.
RBC-Ukraine explains what to expect from magnetic storms from May 1 to May 4 and how to minimize their impact on your well-being.
Magnetic storm calendar: detailed forecast
According to monitoring centers, space weather at the beginning of May will unfold as follows:
May 1. Solar activity will remain at level 4 (a moderate storm). Many people may feel apathy and mild dizziness.
May 2. A moderate storm will continue throughout the day, dropping to level 3 only toward the evening. This is a weak level that will mainly be felt by highly sensitive individuals.
May 3. The magnetosphere will remain relatively calm. Conditions will be close to normal, allowing the body to recover somewhat.
May 4. A new increase in activity to level 4 is expected. Headaches, insomnia, and general weakness may return.
What is a magnetic storm
During solar flares, microparticles are ejected into space and travel at high speed, colliding with Earth’s magnetic shield. This collision causes disturbances known as magnetic storms.
Weak and moderate storms usually affect weather-sensitive people, but strong geomagnetic storms can worsen the condition of almost anyone and may also disrupt communications, radio signals, and satellites.
Who is at risk?
- Weather-sensitive individuals
- People with cardiovascular diseases or hypertension
- Elderly people and pregnant women
- Those experiencing chronic stress or severe fatigue
Most common symptoms
- Sudden migraine attacks or a heavy feeling in the head
- Blood pressure spikes and rapid heartbeat
- Joint pain and muscle weakness
- Sleep disturbances: insomnia at night or excessive daytime sleepiness
- Irritability and emotional instability
How to protect yourself: expert advice
Magnetic storms affect blood viscosity, increasing strain on the heart. To get through this period more comfortably, follow these simple tips:
- Stay hydrated. Drink more water. Herbal teas with mint or lemon balm can help calm the nervous system.
- Avoid stimulants. Limit coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol — they can intensify the effects on blood vessels.
- Eat light. Avoid fatty and overly salty foods to prevent swelling and blood pressure spikes.
- Sleep and fresh air. Get at least 7–8 hours of sleep. An evening walk outdoors can help relieve “magnetic” tension better than gadgets.
- Medication control. If you have chronic conditions, make sure to keep necessary medications on hand.
