Thailand has temporarily suspended its participation in the peace deal with Cambodia. The document was signed just two weeks ago with the involvement of US President Donald Trump, BBC reports.

According to the outlet, a representative of the Thai government announced the suspension of Thailand’s participation in the peace deal. He said the decision was made after several Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border in Sisaket Province.

Cambodia, for its part, stated that it remains committed to the agreement, which was intended to ensure long-term peace between the two countries.

Both sides signed the agreement, which Thailand refused to call a peace deal, in October during a ceremony attended by the US President in Malaysia.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he agreed with the military leadership’s decision to withdraw from the peace deal, as the "security threat.... has not actually decreased."

According to Thai media, the soldiers were blown up by a land mine while on patrol, and one of them lost his foot.

The peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia envisioned the withdrawal of heavy weaponry from the disputed border region and the establishment of a temporary monitoring mission to oversee the situation.

The next step was to be the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers captured by Thai forces.

Thailand–Cambodia conflict

The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has lasted for more than a century, rooted in a disputed border established after the French occupation of Cambodia.

New clashes along the border began on July 24 in Thailand’s Sisaket Province and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province.

The main fighting took place in the northern border area, far from Thailand’s coast and tourist regions along the South China Sea.

Eventually, US President Donald Trump stepped in to mediate the conflict. In August, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire, and on October 26, a peace deal was signed with the participation of the American leader.
