A suspect has emerged in the case of the murder of two Ukrainian women in Belgium. The victim’s son has confessed to stabbing his mother and sister, according to VRT.

"The son confessed to stabbing his mother and sister, and then starting the fire. This was reported by the Leuven prosecutor’s office," the statement said.

The 16-year-old son of a Ukrainian citizen was at school during the fire. At first, he was taken into protective custody, but it has now been revealed that the teenager confessed to the double murder.

According to the publication, the boy’s motive remains unclear. He will appear before a juvenile court.

Murder of Ukrainian nationals in Belgium

On June 6, at around 9:30 a.m. local time, the fire brigade received a call about a fire at a house on Milsestraat Street in the town of Haasrode. The house belongs to a local priest but had been rented by the municipality to accommodate Ukrainian refugees.

Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters found the body of a 46-year-old woman. They also discovered her 6-year-old daughter, who was resuscitated but did not survive.

Both victims had stab wounds, and the fire expert's findings confirmed that the blaze had been set intentionally.

The Ukrainian family had been living in Belgium for three years. The children’s father is a serviceman.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed the country’s embassy in Belgium to take the murder case under special supervision.
