Taliban to participate in UN climate conference first time
The Taliban will take part in the UN climate conference for the first time since seizing power in Afghanistan. Azerbaijan invited representatives of the Taliban as observers, reports Reuters.
Thanks to the invitation, Taliban representatives will be able to participate in secondary discussions and hold bilateral meetings.
The UN Climate Change Conference COP29 will begin in Azerbaijan on November 11. This will be one of the most important international events in which representatives of the Taliban will participate.
In recent years, they have participated in UN-organized meetings on Afghanistan in Qatar, and Taliban ministers have attended forums in China and Central Asia.
UN member states do not recognize the Taliban as the official government of Afghanistan due to the severe restrictions that the Taliban impose on women. However, after seizing power in 2021, the Taliban took part in UN-organized meetings on Afghanistan in Qatar and attended forums in China and Central Asia.
Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, who controls the government in Afghanistan, approved laws this summer banning women from speaking and showing their faces in public.
Prior to this, Taliban authorities across the country banned women from attending private and public universities, as well as working in many professions.
Girls in particular were banned from attending middle and high school, and women from going to parks and gyms. They were also required to wear head-to-toe clothing in public places.
