Hungary could block the next extension of EU sanctions against Russia if Budapest notices "threats to the country's energy security", stated Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, according to 444.hu.

"Hungary has never hidden its position on sanctions, and the last three years have clearly shown that we are right in the area of sanctions... It would be better to get rid of them as soon as possible," said Szijjártó.

He reminded that this week the European Commission supposedly gave assurances that Ukraine will not jeopardize Hungary's and Central Europe's energy security.

"If the European Commission fails to keep its word, if it cannot prevent Ukraine from taking actions or decisions that could harm Hungary's energy security, then it will have to take responsibility for the next decision regarding sanctions," the Hungarian FM added.

Orbán's threats

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that his country could veto the extension of sanctions against Russia for another six months.

He clarified that this scenario is possible if Ukraine does not resume the transit of Russian gas.

Just a few days ago, it was announced that EU foreign ministers had supported the extension of sanctions against Russia for six months.
