The leader of the Syrian rebels, Ahmad al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, announced his intention to dissolve the security forces of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad, reports Reuters.

The office of the rebel leader stated in a written statement to the agency that Sharaa would dissolve the security forces of the previous regime and close the notorious prisons.

According to estimates, Assad's regime held tens of thousands of prisoners, many of whom were desperately searching for their loved ones. Some were released alive, others were identified as deceased, while thousands remain missing.

Additionally, the statement mentioned that the military command associated with Sharaa's group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, will grant amnesty to conscripts.

The rebel leader also said he is closely monitoring potential chemical weapons stockpiles and is coordinating with international organizations to secure them. The group has already declared that it will not use chemical weapons under any circumstances.

In his statement, Sharaa reiterated that he plans to form a technocratic government, with the current transitional government operating until March 2025.

Fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria

Last week, fighters from the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham swiftly seized key cities in Syria, including the capital, Damascus.

Dictator Bashar al-Assad, along with his family, hastily left the country, finding refuge in Russia under the protection of President Vladimir Putin. This marked the fall of the 50-year rule of the Assad family.

In the country, a three-month transitional government of ministers was established, which had previously governed the rebel enclave in northwest Syria.

The rapid change of power occurred due to the leadership of Abu Mohammad al-Julani, a former jihadist who adopted more moderate views.

The new Syrian government has called on refugees to return to the country.
