Syria bans import of goods from Iran, Israel and Russia
Goods from Iran, Israel, and Russia are no longer allowed into Syria. The new Syrian government has announced a corresponding ban on imports, according to Alarabiya.
The agency notes that, following the fall of the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, Syria has witnessed a diverse influx of imported goods entering local markets.
In particular, shops in the capital, Damascus, are now filled with various goods, ranging from Turkish bottled water and Saudi food products to chocolate treats like Twix and Snickers, as well as Pepsi and other international brand beverages.
To support the economy, the new government has announced the introduction of the dollar in the country and approved a new set of unified customs tariffs, which will be reduced by 50-60%.
They also explained that the decision aims to facilitate imports to support local producers as part of efforts to boost economic activity and stimulate industry.
It is worth noting that about a week ago, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that at the end of January, EU foreign ministers would hold a meeting in Brussels. During the meeting, they are expected to discuss the possibility of lifting sanctions on Syria.
