Sweden states all citizens must be prepared for war
There's a threat of war, and all citizens "must act to strengthen the country's defense," according to the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, Micael Bydén, and the Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oscar Bohlin.
According to Minister Bohlin, the situation is very serious. He has expressed concern that the modernization of civil defense is not happening quickly enough.
The minister emphasizes that "Sweden may face war, and all Swedes must act to strengthen the country's defense."
This sentiment is echoed by the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces.
"Now it's about moving from words and understanding to action," says Bydén.
He mentions that in recent years, much has been done to strengthen Sweden's security through significant investments in defense.
However, Sweden is still on the threshold of NATO membership, and Bydén believes that the sooner the country becomes a full member of the Alliance, the better.
"We must realize how serious this situation is. Look at the news from Ukraine and ask simple questions: if this happens here, am I prepared? What should I do? The more people who think, reflect, and prepare, the stronger our society," he emphasizes.
The Swedish Army's Supreme Commander adds that in the event of war, "a strong civil society is more important than ever."
Sweden's recent statements regarding war aren't new
Recently, the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tobias Billström, stated that Russia would remain a serious threat to the security of Sweden and Europe in the foreseeable future.
"We must prepare for a long-term confrontation that will continue as long as Russia violates the UN Charter and the European security order," he said.
The minister also emphasized that Sweden's military and political support for Ukraine would continue, welcoming the EU's decision to accept Ukraine as a member.
"Ukrainian soldiers are also fighting for our freedom and values," he said.
