Sweden expels Chinese journalist over national security threat
The Swedish authorities have ordered the expulsion of a Chinese journalist, stating that she may pose a serious threat to national security, according to Reuters.
It is reported that a 57-year-old Chinese woman has lived in the country for almost 20 years and has denied all accusations. The journalist's lawyer did not disclose the woman's name. However, he said that he could not provide details of the accusations as they relate to national security and are officially confidential.
"The security police have argued that it can be assumed that my client may pose a serious security threat. This assessment has been agreed by the Migration Agency, the Migration Court and the government," the lawyer said.
The public broadcaster SVT did not disclose details of the accusations but reported, without naming its source, that the woman published articles on her website and received reporting-related payments from the Chinese embassy in Stockholm. She also hosted Chinese government and business delegations during visits to Sweden and sought to arrange meetings with Swedish officials.
China's espionage activities around the world
Recently, a US Navy serviceman was sentenced to 27 months in prison for accepting a bribe of nearly $15,000 from a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for photographs of US military information.
It was also reported that the British government is considering reducing the number of Chinese citizens who can enter the country on official business. This is due to the espionage threat posed by Beijing. The aim is to pressure China and other countries to provide more detailed information and allow more time for checks.
