Sumy and Donetsk regions under fire: Ukrainian defenders shot down 116 Russian drones and ballistic missiles

In the early hours of Monday, April 5, the Russian army launched a drone attack on Ukraine from four directions. A total of 116 drones and ballistic missiles were deployed, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports.
According to the Ukrainian military, starting at 11:00 p.m. Kyiv time on May 4, the enemy attacked the Sumy region with two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles launched from Russia's Kursk region.
In addition, the enemy launched 116 strike UAVs and decoy drones of various types from the areas of Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, and Prymorsk in the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region.
Aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine's Defense Forces countered the aerial attack.
As of 9:00 a.m. Kyiv time on May 5, about 42 strike drones of the Shahed type and other UAVs were confirmed shot down over eastern, northern, and southern regions of the country. Another 21 enemy decoy drones were lost locally without negative consequences.
The Sumy and Donetsk regions suffered from the enemy’s attack.
Overnight Shahed drone attack
During the night of May 5, an air raid alert was declared in several regions due to a Russian drone attack. The enemy used several groups of Shahed drones for the strikes.
A series of explosions also occurred overnight in Konotop, Sumy region, amid the enemy drone attack. Air defense forces and systems remain active.
