Today, on July 19, the Russian army struck a residential area of Mykolaiv with a missile. As a result of the shelling, people were injured and killed, including a child.

RBC-Ukraine shows photos from the scene of the Russian attack on Mykolaiv and tells what is known so far.

What happened

In the evening, the Air Force warned about the launch of Russian missiles towards Mykolaiv, after which an explosion was heard in the city. Later, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych reported that the missile hit a residential area, directly striking the courtyard of residential buildings.

Preliminary information from the Prosecutor General’s Office

According to preliminary information from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Russians used a Kh-59 missile in their strike on Mykolaiv. The impact damaged a playground at a kindergarten in the courtyard of the high-rise buildings. The blast wave and debris also damaged several residential buildings.

What is known about the victims

According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, as of 7:00 PM, three people have been reported killed in the Russian strike. The victims include a man, a woman, and a child. The mother of the deceased boy is in a state of shock and is receiving support from psychologists. Additionally, five other residents of the city were injured in the attack.

"Rescuers and police are currently inspecting the scene - besides the three buildings, the kindergarten was also damaged. We are providing all necessary assistance to the victims. A help center has been set up. The affected individuals can also file a police report there about destroyed and lost property," the Interior Minister reported.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the deceased boy was 12 years old.

Zelenskyy's reaction

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already reacted to the shelling of Mykolaiv. He expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those who died and called on the world to increase pressure on Russia.

“Russia proves every day with its terror that the pressure on it is insufficient. Such destruction of life must be stopped. New solutions are needed to support our defense. Russia must feel the strength of the world,” the President said.

Situation in Mykolaiv region

Although the Mykolaiv region (except for the Kinburn Spit) has been liberated from Russian forces, it occasionally comes under enemy missile or drone attacks.

For example, on the night of July 9, the enemy attacked an enterprise in the Bashtanka district with a missile, and in April, as a result of Russian strikes on the village of Solonchaky, a woman was killed and a 14-year-old boy was injured.
