Harsh limits on X: Musk restricts posting activity for free accounts

According to widespread user complaints on X and Reddit, the company has reduced daily posting limits for accounts without an official announcement.
From now on, the official X Help Center page in the technical limits section states that unverified accounts are restricted to 50 original posts and 200 replies per day.

Such changes have sparked a wave of outrage among long-time users of the platform, who were used to significantly greater freedom of action.
Technical details
Previously, the general rule allowed users to publish up to 2,400 updates per day. Interestingly, the updated rules page still contains references to the old limit of 2,400 updates.
Going forward, for user convenience, the social network will send special error notifications once the limit is fully reached. The system will clearly specify which limit has been exceeded — original posts or replies.
Fight against bots vs traffic decline
Analysts link this move to Elon Musk’s large-scale campaign aimed at reducing spam and activity from automated bot networks on the platform. This strategy has been ongoing for some time — for example, last October X introduced a feature called “About this account,” which openly displays the country and region of a profile’s origin.
On the other hand, dissatisfied users argue that such aggressive enforcement of paid subscriptions could have the opposite effect. A drastic reduction in basic features may trigger another wave of users leaving for competing platforms.
How much does it cost to remove the limits?
For content creators who plan to stay on the platform and post without daily limits, the only official option is to switch to paid X Premium plans.
Currently, the cheapest available subscription — the Basic tier — costs from $2 per month or $32 per year. Paying for this plan fully removes daily limits on posting original content and interacting in replies.
