Stoltenberg to take on new role after NATO term ends, Politico
Jens Stoltenberg will step down as NATO Secretary General on October 1. He will subsequently chair the Munich Security Conference, according to Politico.
According to the media source, Stoltenberg is expected to take over as chairman of the Munich Security Conference after its next edition in February 2025.
The current chairman, Christoph Heusgen, assumed this position only in 2022.
Meanwhile, the long-serving head of the Foundation Council of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, will retain his position.
It should be noted that former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has held the position of NATO Secretary General since 2014. However, as of October 1, he will be replaced by former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Rutte - new NATO Secretary General
It is worth recalling that Jens Stoltenberg repeatedly stated that he did not wish to remain NATO Secretary General, but a suitable replacement was hard to find.
NATO member countries discussed various successor options for Stoltenberg. Among the potential candidates was British Defense Minister Ben Wallace. However, his candidacy was not supported by the US.
In the end, the new NATO Secretary General was chosen to be former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
