UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom and France, possibly along with other countries, will work on a plan for Ukraine. Once the plan is agreed upon, it will be presented to the United States, The Guardian reports.

Starmer stated that after discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, it was agreed that the UK, France, and "possibly one or two others" would work with Ukraine on a "plan for ending hostilities."

According to him, the agreed plan will then be presented to the United States.

"I think we’ve got a step in the right direction," Starmer told reporters.

The UK Prime Minister believes that US President Donald Trump "wants to see lasting peace in Ukraine," despite his rhetoric and attitude toward Zelenskyy.

According to British media, Starmer refers to "lasting peace" as a "US backstop", along with security guarantees provided by European countries and a strong Ukraine with defensive capabilities to withstand Russian aggression.

Trump and Zelenskyy’s clash

On February 28, Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump met at the White House.

It was expected that Ukraine and the US would sign an agreement on mineral resources.

However, during their conversation, a verbal dispute broke out between Zelenskyy, Trump, and US Vice President JD Vance over the war in Ukraine. Shortly after, Zelenskyy left the White House ahead of schedule.

Trump later accused Zelenskyy of being unwilling to make peace and instead wanting to continue fighting.

Following the confrontation, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer contacted both Trump and Zelenskyy. According to media reports, he attempted to salvage the agreement but was unsuccessful.

On March 2, a summit on Ukraine will take place in London, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in attendance.
