UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke today with key European leaders. He told them that the continent is entering a "new era for the global economy" in light of President Trump's tariffs, reports CNN.

According to a press release from Starmer's office, he called European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Friedrich Merz, Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting.

"They all agreed that — as with defence and security — this is a new era for the global economy. Europe must rise to meet the moment and ensure the impact on hard-working people is minimised, while working closely with other countries to help maintain wider economic stability," the statement read.

Although Starmer is disappointed by the new tariffs, he urged calm while “preparing for all eventualities." CNN writes that this echoes previous statements from the UK Prime Minister regarding US President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Trump's tariffs

This week, Trump announced significant reciprocal tariffs against nearly all of the US's trade partners.

According to Reuters, EU countries are planning to take countermeasures against US tariffs in the coming days. These measures include tariffs on all imports from the US, ranging from toothbrushes to diamonds.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that over 50 countries have reached out to the White House with a proposal to start trade talks.
