Security guarantees from the United States are the only effective way to deter Russia from launching another attack on Ukraine, stated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to Sky News.

Starmer reiterated that he is open to considering the potential deployment of British troops to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached. However, he emphasized that this must happen with US support.

The Prime Minister emphasized that a "US backstop" is the "only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again".

The British Prime Minister noted that the future of not just Ukraine, but Europe as a whole, is at stake.

"It is an existential question for Europe as a whole, and therefore vital for Britain's national interests. This is a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our continent," he added.

He added that any peace agreement for Ukraine must "safeguard its sovereignty" and deter Vladimir Putin from "further aggression in the future".

He also confirmed that next week he will travel to Washington and meet with US President Donald Trump to "discuss what we see as the key elements of a lasting peace."

Additionally, Starmer announced talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "in the coming days" and expressed hope that after his visit to the US, new discussions would take place with European allies.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

Earlier, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that President Donald Trump wants to end Russia's war against Ukraine, but that Europe will be responsible for security guarantees.

In addition, Europe is now actively discussing the issue of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. According to The Washington Post, European countries may provide up to 30,000 troops for this purpose.
