Speaker Johnson supports lifting restrictions on Armed Forces usage of US weapons
All restrictions on Ukraine's use of US weapons in the war with Russia must be lifted. This is the will of the Congress, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson said.
After meeting with delegations from NATO countries at the summit in Washington, he said that this issue was discussed. "I am a supporter of that," he responded to the question regarding removing restrictions from the Ukrainian army.
"I explained that the will of the Congress is to allow them (Ukrainian Armed Forces) the flexibility to use the weapons and assistance that were sent to prosecute the war as they see fit. I believe that's what Congress intended," he said.
On July 10, Mike Johnson met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The key topic of discussion was strengthening Ukrainian-American cooperation.
Ukraine has stated that it needs to strike military targets on Russian territory to protect itself and repel Russian attacks. Debates on this issue among its allies are among the main topics discussed at the NATO summit from July 9-11.
Some European countries, such as the United Kingdom, have expressed support for Ukraine's position, but the U. government has so far resisted lifting all restrictions on the use of its weapons by Kyiv. The Biden administration states that it has not allowed Ukrainian strikes deep within Russia, considering this a red line to prevent escalation with Moscow.
