Speaker Johnson complains to Zelenskyy about Ukraine’s Ambassador to US
Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson has sent a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, demanding the dismissal of Ukraine's Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, according to the letter of Speaker Mike Johnson.
"Dear President Zelenskyy, I demand that you immediately fire Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova," Johnson wrote in his letter.
As the speaker explained, this week Markarova organized an event during which an American manufacturing facility was visited.
The letter indicates that the facility was involved in a political controversy led by US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Johnson claims that no Republicans were deliberately invited to the event.
"The tour was clearly a partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference. This shortsighted and intentional political move has caused Republicans to lose trust in Ambassador Markarova's ability to fairly and effectively serve as a diplomat in this country. She should be removed from her post immediately," the Speaker emphasized.
He reminded that he had previously made it clear that all foreign states must refrain from expressing opinions or interfering in the domestic politics of the United States.
"Support for ending Russia's war against Ukraine continues to be bipartisan, but our relationship is unnecessarily tested and needlessly tarnished when the candidates at the top of the Republican presidential ticket are targeted in the media by officials in your government. These incidents cannot be repeated," Johnson added.
Zelenskyy's visit to Washington
As previously reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties on September 26 during his visit to the US Capitol.
However, it was later revealed that a meeting between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Zelenskyy may not take place.
On September 26, two meetings between Zelenskyy and US President Joe Biden are also planned at the White House.
