The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, will stand trial on corruption charges. The judge has already banned her from leaving the country and confiscated her passport, reports Reuters.

The suspect is accused of using her position. The investigation believes she helped private companies secure profitable government contracts. Gómez herself categorically denies any wrongdoing.

Threat to her husband's political career

Pedro Sánchez is one of the few left-wing leaders remaining in power in Europe, the article states. The Prime Minister claims the case has been fabricated and calls it a campaign by right-wing forces aimed at removing him from office.

Gómez's lawyers are already preparing an appeal and will challenge the seizure of the passport. Meanwhile, the Socialist Party has called the process judicial and political persecution.

Who else is suspected of corruption?

Begoña Gómez is not the only figure in high-profile investigations. Close associates of the Prime Minister have also come under suspicion:

  • The former Minister of Transport;
  • The third-ranking leader of the Socialist Party;
  • A number of officials responsible for procurement.

The cases involve alleged kickbacks in various sectors. These include oil and gas contracts and irregularities in the procurement of protective masks during the pandemic. All suspects deny any wrongdoing.

Which other European politicians are suspected of corruption?

Currently, Serbian President Vučić is facing major problems, with protesters demanding his resignation. Citizens are accusing the government and the president of corrupt practices.

Former Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán may also find himself in court. The new Prime Minister, Magyar, has invited EU prosecutors to investigate corruption during his predecessor's tenure.

Even French President Macron's office was searched. The Élysée Palace was searched as part of an investigation into financial misconduct.
