A commuter train accident occurred in Barcelona after a retaining wall collapsed onto the railway tracks. At least one person was killed, and 37 passengers were injured to varying degrees, according to AP.

The accident in Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, happened just two days after another major railway disaster, which claimed at least 42 lives and injured dozens more.

According to reports, rescuers continued searching through the train wreckage on Tuesday. Following the previous tragedy, the country had declared a three-day national mourning period.

Rescue services in Catalonia clarified that of the 37 injured, five are in serious condition, and six sustained moderate injuries. About 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and the victims were taken to three hospitals in the region.

The report also notes that serious railway accidents are relatively rare in Spain, and the high-speed rail network is generally considered reliable. However, commuter rail services regularly face reliability issues.

According to AP, the accident occurred near the town of Gelida, approximately 35 minutes from Barcelona. The Spanish rail operator ADIF stated that the retaining wall likely collapsed due to heavy rains that occurred earlier this week. Train traffic in the area has been suspended.

Just a few days ago, Spain experienced the largest train accident in 13 years, which killed 42 people.

Additionally, a road traffic accident occurred involving an international passenger bus traveling the Vienna–Kyiv route. Several passengers were injured, and some were hospitalized.
