Spain backs Ukraine's EU accession talks, Foreign Minister confirms
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held a meeting with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares. One of the topics discussed was Ukraine's accession to the European Union, according to statements from Kuleba and Albares on X.
"I confirmed Spain's firm commitment to Ukraine's peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. We also support the start of negotiations regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU," the Spanish minister wrote after the negotiations.
In turn, Kuleba thanked for Spain's support in Ukraine's resistance to Russian aggression and the commencement of accession negotiations with the EU.
According to the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he also discussed with his colleague ways to increase defense production in Europe.
Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU
Recently, the European Commission published a report on the progress of Ukraine and other candidate countries on their path to the European Union.
The department recommended starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. For this, all leaders of the bloc's countries need to support the relevant decision. They aim to consider it at the summit on December 14-15.
So far, Hungary has openly stated its opposition to starting accession negotiations with Ukraine.
