South Korea confused with North Korea at Olympics opening ceremony
South Korea was confused with the DPRK at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. The organizers apologized to Seoul, reports Reuters.
During the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris, the announcer introduced South Korea as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea when a boat with South Korean athletes was passing along the Seine. The official name of North Korea was announced in English and French.
When the DPRK delegation sailed down the river at the opening ceremony, the announcer also used the same introduction.
South Korean Deputy Minister for Sports and Culture Jang Mi-ran asked for a meeting with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. The National Olympic Committee of South Korea passed on information about the incident to the organizers of the Games and asked them not to repeat the mistake.
The IOC stated that the incident was a mistake and apologized.
South Korea is represented at the 2024 Olympics by 143 athletes in 21 sports. North Korea returned to the Olympics for the first time since 2016. The DPRK sent 16 athletes to France.
