The head of the Slovak government emphasizes that he respects the choice of the Hungarian people and seeks to build mutually beneficial and friendly relations with Budapest.
Bratislava also advocates for the resumption of active work within the Visegrad Group, which includes Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Fico pays special attention to joint efforts to protect the energy interests of the region. In this context, he emphasizes the importance of restoring the Druzhba oil pipeline, which was damaged as a result of Russian attacks.
"I believe that Slovakia, Hungary, and Central Europe as a whole continue to have a significant interest in restoring the Druzhba oil pipeline," the Slovak Prime Minister notes.
Repairing Druzhba
The Druzhba oil pipeline has become a tool for exerting pressure on Kyiv. Hungary blocked a €90 billion EU loan and linked the unfreezing of this issue to the resumption of oil supplies.
In response, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the suspension of gas supplies to Ukraine and directly linked this decision to the situation surrounding the oil pipeline. In reality, the reason for the Druzhba shutdown was Russian airstrikes on the pipeline’s infrastructure in late January 2026.
At the same time, Robert Fico supported the Hungarian position and also threatened to block future loans to Ukraine, although responsibility for the damage to Druzhba lies with the Russian side.
In addition, Fico called on the EU to lift sanctions on Russian oil and gas. He also proposed taking steps to resume supplies via the Druzhba pipeline.
