Sky mystery over Ukraine: Rare glowing clouds spotted above Sumy, photos

On the evening of Wednesday, July 2, a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as noctilucent clouds was spotted in the sky over the Sumy region, according to the Sumy Regional Center for Hydrometeorology.

The Regional Center for Hydrometeorology reported that the noctilucent clouds seen above the Sumy region are an incredible natural phenomenon.

Experts explained that this rare atmospheric occurrence can only be observed in summer, during twilight.
This time, the clouds were captured by stokh.syndr, Anton Redkin, and Anastasiia Bratukha.

"These are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, glowing due to reflected sunlight at an altitude of around 80 kilometers," the center clarified.

They noted that noctilucent clouds:
- are formed from ice crystals in the mesosphere;
- emit a soft, pearlescent glow.
