Incorrect drying can lead to brittleness and loss of the healthy look of your hair. Experts have shared tips on how to properly dry it to keep it strong and beautiful, according to HuffPost.

A loctician Laverne Amara explained that one of the biggest mistakes people make is going to bed with wet hair, which can lead to an unpleasant odor.

She also outlined methods to dry different hair types for maximum efficiency, smoothness, and protection.

Wrapping hair in a towel

Best for wavy and curly hair.

After applying styling products, wrap your hair in a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt to absorb excess moisture. Keep it on for 10 to 30 minutes before letting it air dry.

This method reduces friction, keeps curls defined, and prevents damage.

It’s important to note that a traditional towel can cause frizz and breakage, so using the right fabric is essential.

After excess water is absorbed into the towel, let your hair dry naturally or near a fan to minimize heat damage.

Use a diffuser

Best for curly hair or when you want to enhance waves.

Hairstylist Monet Everett explained that a diffuser is a special blow-dryer attachment that evenly distributes airflow along the hair length. It adds volume and maintains curl definition.

Start by focusing on the roots, then place sections of hair into the diffuser and gently lift them toward the scalp to enhance volume and shape. Gradually move towards the ends, being careful not to disrupt the curls.

Hooded dryer

Suitable for all hair types, especially textured and curly hair.

A hooded dryer is a device similar to a salon helmet dryer. It provides even heat distribution without disturbing the hair structure.

Wear a hairnet before blow-drying

Use a medium-mesh nylon hairnet. First, towel-dry your hair as much as possible to remove excess moisture, then place the cap on before blow-drying.

Blow-dry using circular motions. The mesh cap prevents hair from becoming frizzy.

Blow-dry in sections

If you typically dry all your hair at once, consider this simple yet effective method.

Divide damp hair into four to six sections, depending on its thickness.

Drying hair this way ensures even drying, reduces breakage, prevents tangling, and makes styling easier.

Dry and curl with socks

If you prefer not to use a blow dryer, you can wrap your hair around socks to use them as soft curlers. Simply hold the wrapped socks near a warm drying source for a few minutes.

This technique is not necessarily faster than using a hairdryer, but it is less likely to damage your hair since it shortens drying time.

If your hair is damp and wrapped in warm socks, it can reduce drying time by about one-third.

The number of socks you use depends on the thickness of your hair.
