Polish President Karol Nawrocki is expected to discuss strengthening NATO eastern flank during his meeting with US President Donald Trump. He is also being advised to demand the cancellation of a US visa issued to former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is reportedly hiding in the United States, according to Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
What to discuss with Trump
Sikorski says that if the meeting between the two leaders takes place, the top priority should be to reaffirm commitments to strengthening the region's defense.
"In our view, it (the US presence — ed.) should be increased where it is truly needed, namely on the eastern flank where there is a threat. That is the key issue," the Polish foreign minister emphasized.
The second key issue, he said, is the cancellation of the US visa of wanted former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who, according to investigators, is hiding in the United States from fraud charges related to the Justice Fund.
"Zbigniew Z. is not a journalist; he is a deputy leader of the main opposition party and a member of parliament. He should be in the Sejm, in Warsaw, not in the United States, so I hope the president will demand the cancellation of this fraudulent visa," the minister said, adding that such precedents should not exist between allied countries.
Developments in Polish-German relations
Radosław Sikorski also commented on the 35th anniversary of the Polish-German Treaty on Good Neighbourship and Friendly Cooperation, calling the economic results of cooperation impressive.
He noted that over this period, trade between the two countries has increased thirtyfold, with daily turnover reaching half a billion euros. As a result, Poland, together with the Czech Republic, has become a larger trading partner for Berlin than the United States or China.
Earlier warnings in Poland
Polish officials have recently been actively commenting on the country's foreign policy and President Karol Nawrocki's upcoming visit to the United States.
In particular, Prime Minister Donald Tusk advised the president to remind Donald Trump of his previous commitments and said that Poland is already preparing infrastructure and funding to increase the presence of US troops on its territory.
At the same time, Warsaw has taken a critical view of the stability of the Russian regime amid its ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be removed from power by members of his own inner circle, comparing his potential fate to that of Roman emperors overthrown by their Praetorian Guard.
