Significant progress regarding the special tribunal for Russia is expected in April. Negotiations for its creation are currently ongoing, stated the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, during a press briefing in Kyiv.

He mentioned that the active work on the tribunal is ongoing. Berset noted the participation in all the negotiations within the core group. He expressed hope that significant progress could be achieved soon, possibly by April or at the beginning of next year, marking an important step toward ensuring that the special tribunal could start functioning.

According to Berset, a special tribunal is possible only if it is possible to secure support from a number of countries.

He also pointed out that if the tribunal is created without global support, it would not receive cooperation from other countries.

Berset's visit

The visit of Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset to Kyiv was announced yesterday, December 4.

He has already met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The parties also discussed the creation of a special tribunal for Russia.

Such a special tribunal is necessary to ensure that Russian war criminals receive the punishment they deserve.
